My Mother has Muscular Dystrophy

My mother wasn't diagnosed with muscular dystrophy until a few years ago at around age 55.  That may sound odd to some who know more about MD.  She has limb-girdle dystrophy, which can be diagnosed anywhere from childhood to mid adulthood, so why was my mother diagnosed so late?

In order to find out what was around, she ended up having a DNA test because nothing else was working and her walking was getting progressively worse when she was in her late forties.  When the doctors discovered that it was muscular dystrophy, they also discovered another DNA strand that had been suppressing the MD from coming through.

So, here's to my mom, perhaps her DNA strand can create medicine one day to suppress MD in children.

My mother and I at today's MD walk!
